Hi, I'm Looking for a 9' #5 or #6 wt graphite fly rod blank. I do not want an ultra fast, stiff blank. I want a blank with a "medium-fast" action, one that flexes deeper into -- not just tip flex -- the rod. I'm thinking IM6?
The rod is intended as a big river rod for large trout and smallmouth bass. What blank(s) would you suggest? Re: 9' 5/6wt graphite blank recommendation

Batson RX6 in either weight fits your criteria,, but in my opinion the RX7 would be a better choice for that type of fishing. Re: 9' 5/6wt graphite blank recommendation

Pac Bay's T2 series - go with the 6 wt. blank - it will do beautifully with the 5 wt line as well. Thanks - Marc Keep it simple - that's all I can handle! Re: 9' 5/6wt graphite blank recommendation

The material the rod is made from does not dictate the action - the taper does. You can make an extra fast action rod from bamboo, or a very slow action rod from the highest modulus graphite.
You need to determine the average distance you'll be casting and fishing and then select a blank with the appropriate power for casting the intended distance with your chosen line. ............... Re: 9' 5/6wt graphite blank recommendation

Good advice... here's the scoop. Rod will be used to fish big water where casts of 40+ feet will be the norm. Flies would be from #4 streamers to #18 dries and everything in between. I realize that's a tall order. What do you think? Re: 9' 5/6wt graphite blank recommendation

You need a blank with a power rating of about ERN 6.5 to 7 or so. Line it with a 6-weight line and go have fun.

OK --- so how do I find out what the ERN rating is of a given 9' 6wt graphite rod blank? Re: 9' 5/6wt graphite blank recommendation

Ask the manufacturer. If they can't give that information to you, move on to another manufacturer.

How many manufacturers provide CCS numbers? I know of Mudhole for their fly blanks and PacBay for their newest Quickline fly blanks. Presumably that means we should not buy from AmTak, Batson, Lamiglas, NFC, Seeker, Sage, Winston, ... Re: 9' 5/6wt graphite blank recommendation

You are free to buy from whomever you wish. If I was looking for a fly rod blank and it was important that I know how much power the blank had, I'd have the manufacturer give me the power number or I'd go elsewhere. The CCS is not a system that some are prohibited from using. It's like a tape measure - any of them can give you this number.

NFC has always offered the CCS ERN figures. Re: 9' 5/6wt graphite blank recommendation

X2 on the Batson RX7 blank. Nice all around rod with a moderate fast action. (not where I can consult my AA tables) The 6 wt blank will match well with your objectives.

Is there a list of manufacturers that generate CCS values? I would think they would see more business from rod builders. btw, NFC CCS stats page has been taken down. I don't know why.
