Building a spinning surf rod for my 11yr grandson. I have built only casting surf rods for myself so looking for a little help for spinning guides. I know i could go with SIC guides but since this is for a 11yr old i believe i need to go with something else. The blank is rated 15-25 lb test and 3/4 - 4oz lure. Mod fast and med power. Would i use the same style for running guides that i would use for reduction guides?

If you're building to the NGC or similar, you normally use smaller, very low frame guides for running guides and much higher frame guides for the butt and reduction guides.

If my grandfather built me a rod, and we went fishing together with it, it would be treated to the best of care. It would be something I would protect dearly....forever.
If you would normally pick a SIC guide for yourself, and you don't mind the cost, I see no reason not to for this rod as well. You will find helpful info in the library on guide layout. If you want to go a step down in price I use a lot of the alconites, in BYAG and BLAG frames. I also like Amtak's nanolite ring. I don't build/fish surf rods though. BTW, nothing wrong with a surf spinning rod but I don't think 11 is too young for a conventional reel. A lot would depend on if the fishing is lighter lures or bait on a fish finder rig.
