packing not enough, I guess?

I just got done with a rod on the dryer, I had wrap the rod with 2 colors of metallic and a metallic trim wrap, I made sure that it was all packed as tight as I can get it, then when I looked at it under the sun i noticed like 4 of the guide wraps and the butt wrap had openings in the wraps, as if the thread slipped apart, you can't really tell from afar, since the thread is purple met and bluemet, but up close it is noticable, I just wondered if the epoxy while it was curing made it slip? anyones guess?

No, it all comes down to the little things you didn't notice before applying finish. A gap here or there is all it takes.

hi lorenzo, metallics are notorious for either slipping during the epoxy process or just plain not sitting well at all.i have used a light coat of 50/50 mixed CP w/water to help get some adhesion and some times that doesn't do it.i would say if you can't really see it from the average anglers point of view than it will be fine, sometimes we as builders have a much more discerning eye and worry what our peers may say, when in truth 99% couldn't tell

Hi Lorenzo,
If you've got some sort of magnifying lens have a close look at each wrap before you go on to the next one, it can be easy to forget when your finished but if you get in the habit of checking each one after it's done then it soon becomes a habit. Barry Chapman has got a camera hooked up to his wrapper and uses 200x magnification on his pc and says that his wraps are much improved with no gaps since he started using it. Bit hard to find a lens with that sort of mag but I find the 4x ones I use work ok for finding those little ones which only show up the instant you put finish on it.
If you adjust any guides then have a look at those again.

Lorenzo
I use a tip I learned from Steve Paterson and I now only burnish 2 or 3 times while wrapping. Use size d thread and surround all sides of your wrap then pack super tight and remove the d thread. When working with M
metallics this helps fight burnishing too much and wearing the color causing whites spots.
Just my .02.
Good luck.
