Painting Reel Seat Hoods !

I have an Aftco aluminum reel seat with gold hoods, and in the process of rewrapping this rod.
I would like to know if it is possible to paint and seal the reel seat hoods to match the new color scheme of the rod. Maybe mask them, spray them and put some kind of sealer on them for durability.?
Any input or suggestions are appreciated.

Thank you,
Tom

Tom,
Possible, but very tough to get paint to stay on a reel seat with good durability that doesn't begin to look shabby in a relatively short time.

Powder coating would be your best option. Spray on enamel, etc. coatings are not going to give you the same durability over the long haul.

If you decide to go the powder coating route, there was a RodMaker article on the process several years ago. The process is not terribly involved, but is very specific if you want good results. Still, it may be a good deal more trouble than the job is worth.

Marbling is just a technique, not an actual coating, so it would be no more durable than the coating itself.

because it is aluminum, you could have it anodized. IMO that would be better than powder coating. BUT it will also cost more

I've had some luck painting hoods using Krylon X-treme paints they are transparent and cover nicely I also coat them with clear coat . They look nice and hold up fairly well , they will "age" with use . I have reel seats & hoods on rods that I use regularly and have not had to re-touch them at all. The paints come in red , purple, green and blue , I did a Penn 965 gold international reel with the red paint , it gets lots of inquiries , I'm happy with it , try it on some scrap chrome or brushed surfaces . Hello All.

Tom I belive the articles are from Joe Emig in 9/5 pg.10 & 9/6 pg.14.

Part 2 came out about the same time as Billy V's "Decorative Wraps" book.
