What is the relative weight difference between nickel silver and aluminum fly seats with wood inserts?

Aluminum will be lighter - but the type of wood insert (and diameter of the insert) will likely make more of a difference. On a related note - since the reel seat and reel will be below your hand any weight there will serve to off-set any weight forward of your hand (helping balance the rod)

John,
Nickel Silver is an alloy made from much denser metals and for a given thickness will be heavier than aluminum. I suspect that the aluminum reel seats may also be an alloy to strengthen the aluminum. However I believe all of that is moot. The reel seat is on the butt section of the rod where the flexing is much less than on the tip section--especially on fast action rods. If you are going to have a little extra weight, the butt section is the best place or it. In addition, when you add the weight of the reel, the extra weight from the reel seat is minor. You could test this by taping up each type of reel seat, attaching the reel and determining where the balance point is for each reel seat. Good luck.

Mike Blomme
