Guide Sizes for a 7wt Fly Rod

I was just curious to see what size insert guides people use on 7 weight fly rods.

I use 8mm on 8 weights but 7mm seem a little small to me, especially when I might overline the rod on occassion and use an 8 wt line. In addition, some of the fast loading tapers are 1/2 weight heavier and I do use them with a 7 weight - most notably SA's Redfish line. I am using either Fuji SIC guides or American Tackle's Ring Lock. I even have one set of Fuji Cermet that I am saving - like that bottle of Scotch you never drink - for some special project.

Thanks,

Tony

I believe most of mine with ceramics have size 8's.

You might want to mock one up and try a set of size 7's. It they'll work with your particular line and connections then you can save a slight bit of weight by using them.

Tom -

You mean you have 8's on your 7 weights?

Thanks,

Tony

Yes. At the time I built most of those, 7's weren't available in the series of guides I used. These days I'd try them and see if they'd work.

I used Fuji size 7s as the runners on an 8 weight.

While they look a little small, the rod casts well and the size has been a non-issue.

Tony, if you go with the minima guides i have used 5 and 6's on some of my personal rods. just make sure it will fit your knot connections. the minimas have a slightly larger opening than the other ceramics

I use size 6 ceramics and size 5 Minimas. (I have tried smaller and regretted it and had to replace the guides).

I use braided mono loops on the end of my fly line looped to furled (knotless) leaders.

If you use hand tied leaders, espeically if the knots are not trimmed close, these guides might give you problems.

I have used fuji tlsg 7 on most of my 7 and 7 weight.. i have never thought I needed anything bigger. Fished everything from permit, sea running brown trout, roosterfish and many more. The weight saving from a size eight to a size seven guide is quite big.
