At most, two wet coats. Unthinned if possible.

1 coat flooded, then wipe the excess if using gudebrod, or other rod building thread. 2 coats if using madiera, or other non-rod building thread with some coating. I wait at least overnight for the last coat to cure before applying finish.

For me, the best number is 0.
