I have an American Tackle Matrix 9ft 3wt broken between stripping guide and the next guide up. The person who built the rod tried to repair it. It appears as though they cut out a section 6 in. long and put in a smaller diameter blank . May have been fiberglass because it flexes like crazy. Do you guys think I need a fiberglass over sleeve with something on the inside? Open to all suggestions. Re: fly rod repair

An oversleeve would be better and should be all you need.

Dean, While you may be able to repair the rod, I would wonder that due to the location of the break and the repair attempt by another, will you be able to get the rod back to the way it was before the mishap? I personally doubt that the rod will preform the same as it once did. I would give a call to American Tackle and see if you could buy a replacement butt section. Just strip off the reel seat and any guides that may be on that section, if you are careful they can be reused, then just add a new cork grip. Just my opinion of avoiding a hassle in the long run. I am with Bill on this! With botched repair removing six inches it is highly unlikely that any further repair work is worth the effort and cost as the end result will most likely be a poor preforming rod. This is in the power section of the rod, and even though it is a 3wt, it still needs to flex properly in the area. If you can obtain a replacement butt section it is the way to go. Re: fly rod repair

if you can not get him a new butt section
Do not play with it When it goes bad -- you will be blamed if you want to do some thing and the small section is - inside - the blank you could try and over sleeve -- Fiberglass better yet Sell him a new rod Bill - willierods.com Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
