Has anyone attempted to do a spiral wrap on an 11' 1-piece surf rod. Or do you know where to get a little more information on how exactly to go about achieving this. The rod is going to be the Lamiglass G1000 surf/bar in the 11' 40 lb 6-12 oz. It will be used as an anchor rod for king-fishing from the pier. Any help or direction towards an old Rodmaker article is greatly appreciated. Re: SPIRAL WRAPPED 11' 1-Piece Surf Rod

Wes,
Pretty straighforward. Essentially place the guides in about the same location as if you were wrapping the same blank as a spinning rod. Just put the butt guide on top and spiral the next few rods around the rod and continue with runners to the tip. You might have to add one transition guide between the location of the butt and normal first guide spacing. Roger Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 04/19/2012 11:57AM by roger wilson. The O'Quinn Spiral method seems to be favored by those who spiral wrap surf rods.
There was an article on that in either the Volume 6 #3 or #4 issue. ............. Re: SPIRAL WRAPPED 11' 1-Piece Surf Rod

Wes,
I could see how a spiral wrap would have an advantage launching and landing baits because the reel would be facing up towards you and not on the backside of the rod. But a one piece rod? Most piers are entered through the pier house or at least some kind of gate; and a one piece 11' foot rod would be awkward at best getting out on the pier. Everyone I know uses a two piece anchor rod because of this. Also consider this, most anchors used weigh 5 to 6 oz so an ideal rod would have a lure weight of 4 to 8 oz so that the anchor is in the "sweet spot" of the rod. Accuracy is the most desirable quality of an anchor rod and not stiffness nor distance because you are already 25 to 30 feet off the surface of the water. Being able to throw and anchor out between two baits is the most important. The last thing you want to happen is to have two baits get tangled together and kink up two perfectly good steel King rigs; not to mention casting over half the bait line would surly raise a few eyebrows. I know dyed in the wool conventional fishermen who use spinning gear for an anchor rod only because accuracy trumps distance, and for heavens sake-don't even consider a Hatteras cast on a pier. I have only seen that one time and it weren’t pretty. Chuck Re: SPIRAL WRAPPED 11' 1-Piece Surf Rod

personally i don't see the advantage of a spiral wrap on an anchor rod,i do build with the smallest guides that the rod will allow, but the intention of the spiral really is to utilize the rods strength in the retreive, tho some will say a 10% increase in casts is acheived,i believe that is user skewed.the lami would probably be better off with a normal set up any way as they are pretty whippy ,not to say it couldn't handle it,but i would be leary tossing 6-10 oz anchors in a spiral set up.tight lines and good luck www.southriverrodsllc.com Re: SPIRAL WRAPPED 11' 1-Piece Surf Rod

Actually the idea is to make the rod stable under retrieve or fish fight. You won't increase casting distance with a spiral wrap (you won't lose any distance either, of course).

Bill,
Fortunately the folks on the end of the pier saw the guy load up and it was a gang convergence before the gent got the cast off. Unfortunately the gent took offence to the situation and stomped off after the group tried to talk him into letting someone set it out for him. The owner came out right quick after refunding him his money to make sure things did not get physical; all in all not a pleasant event for all present. Chuck Re: SPIRAL WRAPPED 11' 1-Piece Surf Rod

Oh Bill,
I have been hooked 3 times on the planks-first time by another angler and the others by hooking live bait on my own accord. I have resigned myself to the fact of being hooked fishing. As a young man I cut myself real bad once with a knife cutting mussels open with my back to the surf on a jetty. Life is full of adventures-and I would not give a single one up for the world! i AM CURIOUS. HOW WOULD YOU USE A SPIRAL WRAP SPINNING ROD? WHERE WOULD THE REEL BE WHEN CASTING? jUST DOESN'T MAKE SENSE. I HAVE MADE A FEW SPIRAL WRAP RODS FOR TROLLING AND THEY WORK OK. CANNOT FIGURE THE SURF SPINNING ROD WITH THE SPIRAL WRAP. Re: SPIRAL WRAPPED 11' 1-Piece Surf Rod
