Unibutt question

Guys, I'm building a couple 50lb rods for a client that wanted me to match existing rods he has, He supplied the #2 Aftco Unibutts for the build, and i'm using Lami LGC-LRT50-W blanks. Here's my question The #2 ferule inside dia. is .875, the butt on my rods are .899, can I turn down these rod butts a little to get them to fit the ferule without hurting the integrity of the blank so it will fit the #2 butt? The #4 butt is huge and not a good fit IMO for these 50lb class rods.
Thanks as always. Walt Walt Davenport "Roadhouse Rods" Re: Unibutt question

Usually butt is trimmed when trying to get the overall length you need. The few 50's I have built are 6' overall length so I end up trimming a good 10-11" off the butt (FSU56XH). Butt then fits in the #2 ferule no problem. Re: Unibutt question

You're talking about taking nearly 1/8th inch off the blank all the way around. That may be significant. I'd trim shorter rather than grind.
What is the overall length you're shooting for to begin with? ............. Re: Unibutt question

The blank is already at the desired length @ 5'3" and going in a #2 short unibutt which will put the overall rod at 6'6" Walt Davenport "Roadhouse Rods" Re: Unibutt question

Are these rods going to be used for stand-up type fishing?

That will be pretty long for a stand-up rod. The longer the rod, the less effective it will be from the stand-up fisherman's standpoint. Unless they specified that length for some reason, I'd strongly consider trimming the but back to fit the uni-butt. A loss of a few inches might actually make the rods more effective.

6'6" rod is fine from a rodholder or on a rail. True stand-up with a harness and/or plate or just into your gut should be 5'6"-6' max. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
