Ferrule finishing techniques

Over spring break, my son and I have been building out a couple of 2-piece 10'6" salmon pier fishing rods. Yes, I do know there is some fiscal danger in having two rod builders in the same house, but I'm willing to take that chance for the amount of time I get to spend with him.

Anyway, before I go and teach him what I was taught for finishing a tip over butt ferrule thread wrap (wax paper and masking tape on the butt piece), I was wondering what is your favorite technique? I know some prefer to finish the pieces separately, but I haven't had any issues. That being said, I'm always open new ideas and greatly value your experiences and opinions.

Thanks!

I just put the rod together and don't get any epoxy on the other section. If your hand isn't that steady, you can mask off that area. I doubt you'd need any wax paper - just peel off the tape when you're done.

The only isssue that I have had is to have the pieces fitted together a little too tight. The additional thread pressure may tighten the fit so that you will not be able to separate the pieces. A firm but not tight fit is needed. You may want to check the fit a couple of times as you wrap the ferrule.

I just build it all assembled. I've never had an issue with thread tension causing fit problems at the ferrule, so maybe it's a thread tension adjustment that needs attention? Anyway, if your thread tension is causing ferrule fit issues, it may be too tight.
