I have a 30 lb solid tripping rod I am building as a bluefish/striper rod. The tip is 18/64.
Since I only use a short leader with a swivel, I would like to use heavy duty micros, but there is no tip even close to a 4 or 5 ring to fit the rod. Would a guide work as a tip on such a rod? Thanks to all. Re: boat rod tip

You can use a guide as a top. I'd say use a heavy duty micro guide like an AMTAK Artus HD Re: boat rod tip

i'm scared when I see things posted like this, people get caught up in hype and get blinded by teh PROPER way to build a rod.
Straight out - you cannot use micros on that blank, for that application. There are ZERO benefits to using micros, only negatives. Re: boat rod tip

What you'd want to do, always, is use the proper size and type guides for any particular rod. That will be the smallest and lightest guides that will pass your line and any required connections, plus hold up to the task required. That second part is as important as the first part. Sometimes the proper size and type is what people call a "micro" and other times, it's not.

Thanks to all. I had misgivings about using micros on a party boat rod. Especially while weaving in an out of fishermen with a blue on the line. Just curious. Re: boat rod tip

I'm with Billy. Fuji MSNG's were always my "high end choice" in the past. These days I'm using a lot of the amtak virtus lites. Price is better and performance is near the same. They require a bit more prep though.
Must be some big bluefish to need a rod like that:) Russ in Hollywood, FL. Re: boat rod tip

John, if you need the guides for that rod let me know, her eis what I stock form AMTAK: [northeastrodbuilders.com], I also have Fuji in stock just not up on the site. I don't know if 50# Mono will even fit through a size 4 guide, lol.
At elast you move when you get a fish on, and dont drag it in over 10 people's lines, cut your line and leave a tangled mess for everyone else ot get out of. Re: boat rod tip

John,
If you put your typical boat rod and reel that is being used for this application - how much does the combination weigh when spooled with typical line and has a typical lure on the end of the line? Roger Re: boat rod tip

I'll guess with that set up with the swivel he's chunking or eeling. I don't think he's jigging because there's no reason to use a swivel...unless he's using braid which is a GIGANTIC NO NO for Bass/Blues on a party boat. IF he is jiggign with a solid glass rod with an 18 tip, it probaly wont' even bend with an 8oz jig on there...but typically they use 2-8oz jigs > the heavier the better. Re: boat rod tip

Billy's almost dead on. The reel will be spooled completely with mono. I jig blues with 30 lb mono with a 12" leader of 40-50 tied to a swivel. The rod will be used on party boats with jigs from A27's to A67's mostly. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
