Anyone know of a water based finish similar to Gudebrod's Rod Varnish-which I guess is no longer available? I do a fair amount of guide repair work during our season here in AK and there is too much waste using two-part finishes over a single wrap and the one part urethane finishes seem to have very short shelf life after opening and I end up only getting use of 50%-60% or so out of a bottle before it thickens up to unusable. If you'll can the urethanes, per the article in the last magazine or the many posts regarding it here on the forum, products like Permaglos and Lumiseal will last indefinitely.

Don,
there are water based polyurethanes too. Deft water based exterior is one i use, the gloss is about $20 for a quart. Shipping is extra. It is designed for foot traffic surfaces so is pretty tough. Added bonus to me: you can start get it off with a surgical wipe: great for repairs on guides. It also is the only one i tried that you can coat with aregualr epoxy without fish eye type issues. The rod dancer one part looks promising but its still being tested. My tests so far: bubble release is more of an issue than with Deft. I am playing with it thinned down to more easily release bubbles but then you are almost back to as many coats needed as with deft ( about 4 or 5) so there is that issue too. Don,
We offer a rod varnish that is water based, it is available at Jann's netcraft, Hopkins and Holloway and Get bit outdoors, we are also testing a water based thread finish that is much thicker then what you are asking for I believe. You will find our rod varnish very similar to the one you need to replace. Thanks Scott Parsons Scott Parsons 919-900-8998 [www.roddancer.com] [www.fishhawkthreads.com] Edited 1 time(s). Bill -
No. I use a product called "Max Seal" as a CP. I have been testing out Scott's ThreadMaster one. It's thicker and more a 'finish'. As Scott posted above it's thicker. When applied with speed it seems to work very well and dries quickly (on the order of 20 minutes to touch) ' Re: Water based rod/wrap finish
