Great buy on chuck

Woodcraft is having a special sale on the Nova G3 chuck with FOUR sets of jaws. The Pin Jaws seem great for a variety of rod building chores, like holding mandrels for turning and plugs and arbors for boring. Just $179 for the complete package. This offer lasts until March 30. I'm not affiliated with Woodcraft, just bought a package and liked it enough to pass it along.

That's about $300 worth of stuff. If you intend to do more than just hold mandrels, it could be a great deal.

It seems like a great deal. But there is something to consider that no one has brought up.... yet.

I find the best jaws for all around rod building lathe chores to be spigot jaws. These close down far enough that you can mount 1/4" mandrels or hold small items for boring. The trick is finding a chuck that lets you use spigot jaws for these chores but keep them on and spin the chuck open far enough to mount 1-1/2 inch turning squares as well. The NOVA won't let you do that! It has a very limited capacity. If you want to insert square stock you have to change to a completely different set of jaws.

The OneWay Talon is about the same size as the NOVA G3 but has almost TWICE the capacity. With spigot jaws you can chuck down on a 1/4" mandrel but also open and chuck a 1-3/4" dia. turning square if you want. I have never taken my spigot jaws off since I put them on.

Just something to think about if you turn any square stock and want to be able to keep the chuck and jaws in place. I don't like standard drive spur centers so being able to chuck up a square in the jaws is important to me. The Talon is only a few dollars more than the NOVA G3 but has a LOT more capacity. Just my .02 worth.

I have the same set that I got on sale last year for the same price. I like using it for holding square stock - especially using the larger jaws. I personally still prefer using a drill chuck for mandrels, and i wouldn't feel comfortable using a spigot jaw for 1 3/4" square stock anyway, so for me it's more servicable than the OneWay Talon offering (and more affordable at this price).
