I just put the second coat of TM lite on my rod and it is dimpleing/ fish eye's bad I wiped all the epoxyed surfaces off first with rubbing alchol Could this be my problem? This is my first time with TM on my last rod I used U40 Dura gloss and I worked pretty good I just thought I would give this TM lite a try but now I'm having problems. So how do I fix this I was thinking of letting it dry then appling a 3rd and final coat of U40 over it to hopefuly fix it. Re: epoxy problems

Yes. Very likely. Never use a solvent wipe as the last step in your surface prep.
The ThreadMaster is not at fault. Either wipe off what you have now, or allow it to set and attempt to apply another coat. ........................ Re: epoxy problems

There is absolutely no reason to wipe the previous epoxy with anything! If it is more then a few days old, it can be scuffed with a 3m pad or light sanding, but no liquids! Re: epoxy problems

I let it setup and there a little crators all over the epoxy! What would my next step be? Just apply a thin third coat to fill in the spots? Should I clean the surface with DNA or just epoxy right over the surface as is? Re: epoxy problems

I learned one thing for sure and that is you can't fill holes. Lightly sand the surface, like the guys above suggested, and put on another coat. I had the same errant thinking about trying to fill in the spots. These guys here are experts and they've seen it all. I've only built about 15 rods so I'm not one of those experts. Don't want to mislead you. I trust I'll be corrected, as I should be, if I'm wrong.

Coat with 1-2 coats of color preserver and never wipe anything down after the initial coat or subsequent coats of finish have been applied. Kevin Knox ANGLER'S ENVY CUSTOM RODS QUEEN ANNE, MD 21657 #_#_#_#_# www.anglersenvy.com Re: epoxy problems

I'm puling my hair out here. I scuffed up all the epoxy and there where ALOT of fish eye's in that second coat. I used a stiff brush and brushed off the dust from scuffing. I mixed up a new batch of epoxy and applied a small section it went on fine but after a few minutes you could see it start fish eye again. So I wiped it off then went to a diffrent test spot and soaked it with DNA waited for it to dry then applied a small test spot and again the smae results! WTH. I'm using a small plastic mudhole mixing cup a brand new out of the package straw to stir it then I dump it over a paper plate lined with a new piece of tin foil. Same as I have done on previous rod builds! Re: epoxy problems

I want to thank everyone for there help with this issue. After a few google searches and ALOT of reading I have found my problem. I have been using syringes with a black plunger. well it appears after the first use the epoxy ate away a little of the plunger (silicone) and this has been contaminating my epoxy! I poured some epoxy directly into a cup and BAM no more fish eyes!!!! Re: epoxy problems

There are several companies that offer syringes that do not contain silicone (nor plungers). Or, get the ones from Flex Coat that have been specially crafted not to have any silicone on the rubber plunger caps.

another thing that will get you fish eyes on the second coat is the razor blade that you cut the fuzzies off with. They may come oiled and must be cleaned with alcohol first. Another is skin oil getting on the wraps from not cleaaning your hands. Another is when you wipe off bad lettering with alcohol for some reason it creates problems.
