Estimating loss of power?

How much does cutting 13" off of the butt of a 9' blank that was rated as a 10 weight reduce the power of the blank? I'm interested in the MHX one piece blanks, but might fish a bass tournament for fun with a fly rod, hoping to get it to around an 8 weight. I know it will slow the action, but I like more moderate action on my fly rods anyway. I doubt there is a formula or anything, but perhaps some who has the blank could do a CCS on the blank assuming the butt were shorter (I believe the measurement can be made without cutting the blank).
Thanks, Ken Re: Estimating loss of power?

Any fly rod will cast an 8-weight line, at some distance. So your first goal will be to determine what casting/fishing range you're going to be working with. Once you've done that, you can begin looking for the right blank per the CCS numbers.
No doubt if you take the measurement full length and then reset and measure as if 13 inches had been cut from the butt, the resulting ERN will be lower. From there you could figure a percentage loss which could be applied to other 10-weight blanks for a decent "guesstimate" but due to differences in taper it's not going to be exact. I have a few "10-weight" blanks and if I have a chance later today I'll run a couple through and see if I can get you an idea of what type of percentage loss in power you'd be looking at. But again, due to differences in taper, it won't necessarily apply across the board. ................ Re: Estimating loss of power?

20-70ft range, I really like my old GLX 8weight.
Thanks Tom. Re: Estimating loss of power?

Something along the lines of a 9 to 9.5 ERN might be your best bet for an 8-weight line.
If the GLX suits what you're wanting to do, run the ERN number on it so you'll have a starting point. ................. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
