The concept has been out there for some time now. You install an extra guide one or two sizes smaller than the fly rod's stripping guide about 4 inches up from the stripping guide, in the hope that the cast line will now have a straighter line path and gain additional casting distance. I've tried it on many rods and only had a older pattern G Loomis 9 1/2 ft, 3 piece, 7 wt show a real improvement with the tamer guide.

The idea is that it may prevent the line from overshooting the 2nd guide in the set-up. In most cases, unless you're using a very supple fly line, it won't make much difference. In the case of very soft, supple lines, however, it can make a definite improvement.

You can add a tamer guide to any fly rod you now own, because the spacings of the other guides does not change. Tape one on and try it. If you see an improvement, wrap it in place. If not, un-tape it.

I wrapped a spinning/fly rod combo and put a tamer guide on for the fly position. It also helps casting when the rod is used in the spinning position. C2
