Hey all, I'm new to the forum, and this great art. My question is, does anyone have the plans for Tom Kirkman and Buddy Owens jig? They were in V1,#5. I can build one pretty easy but would like to try this one. I think I have a line on the plunger to hold the cork.

my quick and easy cork drilling jig for vertical drill presses..first cut a piece of 3/4 in. plywood about 6 ins. square. next scribe a line from corner to corner all 4. now you have an 'x' this is the center of your plywood. now bore a 3/4 hole at 'x' all the way thru the plywood now insert and glue a piece of 3/4 hardwood dowel flush with one side,let dry overnite. now re mark your 'x'. the 'x' now should be in the center of the dowel. now insert the dowel in the hole of your drill press plate. most are exactly 3/4 in. [this is the hole that lets the drill pass thru when drilling] now drill a 11/4 in. hole halfway thru dowel/plywood either with a forsner or spade bit. viola! you have a self centering jig that pops in and out of your drill press when needed. just stick a ring in drill pop it out repeat.

The problem with this is that the hole in the table is not always centered under the drill bit--the position moves a bit every time you raise or lower the table. You also need a device to align the bit with your tables hole. Some drill presses may keep that alignment, but not the ones I've used.

Good point. The jig Mr. Dommer is talking about is centered by lowering a drill bit into the bore of a ring, then sliding the jig into the proper orientation and locking it in place. From there, any size ring can be center bored, hands-free, and the drill press never needs to be turned off. You can bore a ring every few seconds. I"ve done several hundred inside of 30-minutes.

I'll have to go back and see if I still have the files from that issue. If I do, I'll put the original full-sized plans in the library.

I drilled a 1 1/4" by 1/8" deep recess in a pine 1x6 with a forstner bit. When I want to drill cork rings I put the 1 1/4" bit in the drill press and lower it to the board to center it. Clamp (I have wingnuts and screws mounted). Ready to drill the rings. The recess keeps the rings centered and a forstner bit 3/8" or 1/2" drills a nice hole.
