How much of a wrap is necessary for strength, on a tip over butt ferrule? I searched, but didn't find anything on length. This a light 2-6 lb line rod.
Thanks, Jeff Re: ferrule wrap

The goal is to prevent a split-out at the edge of the ferrule. Most modern ferrules are internally reinforced (see the RodMaker article on ferrules and the comments from most of the major blank manufacturers about whether they require external ferrule reinforcement or not).
If you wish to add an external reinforcement, it doesn't need to be very long. A half-inch perhaps, with the thread starting (or stopping) very close to the ferrule opening. Use a bit more tension than what you'd use on your guide wraps. ................ Re: ferrule wrap

Thank you, that's just what I did. About 5/8" inch, a little tighter and right up to the end, but as I looked at it, being ready to be delivered, I began to second guess my work in that area. It is a Pac Bay IM7 kit rod that I bought to build and donate to the local sports club for their ice fisheree raffles. I'll never see it again but I still want it to be right. I only paid $40 for the kit but the diamond wrap was labor intensive and (one of my best so far) and I would hate to see it break because I didn't ensure that it wouldn't.
Thanks again, Jeff Re: ferrule wrap

It sounds like you're going to be fine.

It came from something I penned many years ago as a means of keeping all the reinforcement wraps on a multi-piece rod aesthetically pleasing. I recommended wrapping them a length equal to twice the diameter of the ferrule opening.

Ah yes....i remember back when i didnt even wrap the ferrule, nice looking 7wt 4 piece flyrod, didnt even know i had to do that back then, hmmmmmm i watched this guy as he struck at a nice brown trout about 4kg, needless to say every joint split and he was left standing with a pale vague look on his face........
