Re: wrapping a single foot guide

Glenn,
Generally speaking you are correct.
Commercial guides are well designed with a thread lock designed into the guide foot. So, unless you destroy the thread lock on the foot of the guide, and if you wrap it properly, there is close to 0 issues with failing guides.

But, as I stated earlier, if the guide foot thread lock has been removed from the guide foot and or if the guide foot is exceptionally short; then a locking wrap can make a lot of sense.

When I tie on single foot fly guides on fly rods that have exceptionally short feet with no thread lock on the guide, I always use a locking wrap. The same is true of micros with very short guide feet. But, if a guide has a very short thread foot, and also a very short neck, to really disallow the use of a thread lock, I use the technique of extending the guide wrap past the guide ring. By extending the wrap past the ring of the guide, the guide can not slip out of the end of the wrap because it is surrounded by a tight wrap.

Take care
Roger

Like many, I use the Forhan wrap on ALL single foot guides. Takes just a few seconds so why not?? Most people have never been in an accident or had a house fire but they still have insurance!! Maybe it's just me, but "quicker" has never been a consideration when building a rod. As Bill and Don pointed out, it's also a good selling point as it won't be found on a mass produced rod.

If I don't want to, I don't have to and nobody can make me (except my wife) cuz I'm RETIRED!!

Well, I sure do repair a lot of factory rods with pulled out guides. I have two in right now, each with a missing single foot guide.
I've never, that I know of, had a guide pull out. Every single foot guide I've ever wrapped has the Forhan. Once you get used to it, it takes no longer. I can't imagine a reason not to use it.
