Turning Burl Cork Block

Hello all, quick question. I rcvd my blocks today and sliced some up to make a little design and have it glued up in my clamp right now. I left the slices square. I obviously cant sand it on the lathe initially, but I wanted to make sure I could use a gouge on it too.

Thanks!

A gouge will tend to tear the cork a bit so you'll want to stop soon enough that any deep digs or chuck-outs can be sanded out without your having to take the cylinder too small.

The gouge is fine to get the square to a cylinder, just remember that it's not going to leave a smooth surface. Allow enough material for sanding smooth.

Scott,
Rather than using a gouge for this type work, I prefer to use a Stanly Surform planer.

This is a coarse razor rasp that makes very quick work of this type shaping, without running the risk of really gouging out a big chunk of cork.

If you don't have one, it is one of your best friends when working with cork and shaping the same:

I use the model 21-295 for most of my rough shaping work.

I also use the same tool when I have done a handle glue up of common cork and have to cut through the glue lines and any glue on the surface of the cork.

Good luck
Roger

Roger is dead on........Stanly Surform planer. I use one of these for everything to get the basic shapes I want, wonderful little tool, buy two! I occasionally break one. I just buy the surform file itself and use it in hand.
