How big of lakers are you looking to catch?

If you order from mudhole, their heaviest power blank is the 30" blank, I wouldn't use the 36" or 42" blanks for jigging.

Jason,
we carry 4 different types of Ice rod blanks.

The solid Glass Brim Busters these are the light tip with the designation of BRB.
The Solid Glass heavier models with a designation of "GB"
The tubular graphite which are also heavier models with a designation of "DGB"
And the new MHX solid carbon which are fast action light tips and currently only available in the lighter actions.

Along with a good selection of blanks we have quite a variety of handles ranging from corkalon to carbon tube handles guide sets and kits on most blank models.

Thorne Brothers has the best ice blank offering available. Especially for fish like Lakers and Pike.

Jason,
The rods that I have used in the past for trout and heavy pike fishing were solid glass rods that started as either 5 or 6 foot blanks. These were medium action blanks in a moderate action.

I would just trim the butt of the blank to what ever length was needed for the ice fishing blank. The blank would typically be trimmed to 42 inches. 42 inch's seems to be a very popular length for the folks who go after Lake trout and big pike in the outdoor frozen environment.

I have checked my sources, and I don't see them available any more, but perhaps you can find them.

They were very inexpensive blanks - about $5 each. But the solid glass construction made them virtually unbreakable for these hard fighting fish but made the perfect rod for this application.

In recent years, I have made only SOLID glass or graphite ice rods. In previous years, just too many issues with rod breakage using hollow or tubular blanks for ice fishing.

Good luck
Roger

Roger makes a very good point on trimming if you need a heavy action.
Here is a link to our Saltwater blanks, solid ones towards the bottom.

I made one last year by cutting the tip off of a gator glass live bait blank. 34" with over sized guides. Tourned out to be a great rod for bigger fish.
