Stripper guides for scv 8wt fly rod

American Tackle NIRLS Typhoon Spin/Cast Guides vs Pacbay DP ( both frames are titanium ) . How tall are the NIRLS guides? They look like the fit between a model T casting guide and a A frame spinning guide . Anyone have experience with these guides.

The guide I choose will be used on a SCV 8wt flyrod that will be used mostly for steelhead and bass fishing by a novice fly fisherman. I am a little concerned about using a tall stripper guide getting hung on brush or banged around in a drift boat.

Any suggestions would be welcomed.

Dennis

I don't know much about the PacBay guides, but for the AmTac guides I would go with the NIRLC titanium guides instead of the NIRLS. I think you will find the NIRLS guides too tall. The NIRLC guides are also a little cheaper.

The Fuji TKWAGs are by far my favorite fly rod stripping guides. I've done 4 recent 8wt builds with them as the stripping guides and REC snakes as the running guides and TFAT tops. They are awesome guides for an 8 wt. T Assuming you use a 16/12 or 16/10 they will not be too tall. If you stay with the AmTac's, I agree with the NIRLC recommendation above.

That's a nice rod for a "novice". Nothing like starting at the top, though!

Yes it is, but he was looking at buying a sage one at $795 for a 6wt. I talked some cents into him. He is in his 40's and is just like a 12 yr old on the stream, but progressing Quickly.

I'd also go with the NIRLC instead of the NIRLS. The NIRLC is lighter and plenty strong for the application
