6'10" (I can cut blank down from 7') MH very fast action built as a spinning rod for 3/8-1/2 oz jigs.
I was thinking maybe something like a SCIII or V (depending on his budget) in MH casting blank. Maybe a 5C70MHF? Or maybe an MHX 844? Thoughts? DR Re: Rod choice help

Maybe a little on the light side, but the Batson XSB 822.5 is sweet. I use them for reds and trout here on the coast. 6-14lb line rating and 1/8-5/8oz 6ft 10in. Great blanks, but just may be a little light if fishing heavy cover. Re: Rod choice help

DR,
Based on the rods you are looking at, I'm thinking he is using skirted bass jigs with 3/8-1/2oz. of lead. Just in case, the RX8+S823 or 802.75 with a small extension would be the deal for jigs with 3/8-1/2oz. total weight, or open hook jigs. It certainly wouldn't be my choice for the weedless jigs on a short line or in heavy cover. Otherwise, a 1/4-3/4oz. or 1/4-1oz. mag bass type blank would be the way to go. If he wants a really fast action, maybe an extended 6'6" version could fit the bill. For a split grip, maybe you could trim the butt and sleeve with a woven graphite tube. The tube and overlap would start at the front of the reel seat, and the blank would probably stop under the back of the seat. One other great option, would be Hydra's MB843 in the Uw series. Alex brought some to the ORBS gathering, and it is a top shelf blank. I would put it up there with SCV, RX8+, and any other top shelf blanks. The action reminds me a lot of the 823 with a little stiffer tip. It may be a great option for this build. Give him a call, if SCIV or SCV is in the budget. Joe Edited 2 time(s). I know for a fact that rods in the 802.75 have way too soft a tip for what he's wanting. Mostly the rod will be used for skirted jigs and chompers with football heads, 1/2oz. After sleeping on it, I believe the Batson RX8MB844 is REALLY close to what he's wanting if that helps.....
SCV is budget do-able, I do like the 1/4-1oz SCV. I have built those and they are sweet. DR Re: Rod choice help

Thanks guys -
I'd suggest either of these Hydras: MB843-UW (available in February) SJ842-NG The UW series blank has a faster tip. - Alex Hydra Fishing, LLC Online: [www.hydrafishing.com] Facebook: [www.facebook.com] Email: info@hydrafishing.com Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
