I am looking for a rod blank for pike fishing. I will be throwing 2 oz baits. I am looking at the Raishadow blanks. They have the 7'6" flippin sticks in med heavy and extra heavy. Also they have the 7'10" swimbait rods. Does anyone have an opinion or experience on these blanks for pike fishing? Re: Pike rod suggestion

Dan,
I built a pike rod using Batson's IMB846 and that worked out really well. Thanks, Chad Huderle Huderle Custom Rods Prior Lake, MN Re: Pike rod suggestion

Dan,
I have built lots of pike rods. You seldom need anything heavier than medium heavy for a blank. Roger Re: Pike rod suggestion

Roger
In that same series IMB's a MH is only rated to 3/4 oz if he is going to throw 2 oz lures will that be enough ? I hate the way blanks are rated - Bill - willierods.com Re: Pike rod suggestion

For Pike, most baits are 1/2oz - 2oz , the blank I use is the MHX FS966T 8' Telescopic 3/8OZ - 2OZ Retails $82.00 If U want a 1 piece rod then look at the MHX FS906 7'6" 3/8OZ - 2OZ Retails $ 77.00 I have them both GREAT BLANKS !!!!!!!!!!!! Re: Pike rod suggestion

Bill,
In spite of the way that the blanks are rated, and the fact that the fellow wants to throw 2 oz lures, I would still only go with a medium heavy blank. I have fished a lot for pike up in these northern waters and any time that I pick up an extra heavy rod and start casting, it is good for about two casts and is put away. I just have never found the need to use that heavy a blank for these lures and or fish. (no matter the blank rating). Roger Re: Pike rod suggestion

I guess the only thing is to ask
I take it the heavy one is too heavy and does not cast as well on the 2 oz I guess that a blank is made to cast a certain weight lure is Null and Void LOL I would have looked more at a blank that was around 1 1/2 - 2 oz Bill - willierods.com Re: Pike rod suggestion

I fish for Pike in Canada 3-4 weeks a year and if a 15-20lb plus Pike heads for for slop a med or light action is worthless to get the Pike out of heavy slop. Plus Pike have very hard mouths and U have to have a hard hook set or the pike will spit out the hooks out. The Mudhole FS966T-MHX is one of best blanks for Pike over 12lbs Re: Pike rod suggestion

Would the FS966-MHX work? I see the power is fast compared to mod fast with the rod you ar using. Re: Pike rod suggestion

Richard,
Good point on the size fish you are targeting. Larger fish - heavier rods. Roger Re: Pike rod suggestion
