I just started building Fly Rods and built one for my wife for Christmas and used pink thread as per her favorite color. This is the second rod that I have had this happen to. I added 2 coats of color presever and let it dry for 4 hours and then used Flex Coat and on some of the wraps there are black spots primarly on the bottom. I use an epoxy mixer to mix the epoxy. Any advice would be appriciated on how to prevent this from happining.
Thanks, Re: Thread Discoloration

Putting a light colored thread over a dark colored blank is difficult to do. Some shade change can be expected. "Black Spots" can be due to any number of things - non-uniform thread packing, smudges from your hands, foreign substance on the thread. It might help if you could upload a photo showing exactly what you mean by black spots.

You could try NCP thread with CP over pack Very Well
Let the CP dry overnight But like Tom said over a dark blank it still may not come out You may have to coat under the wrap with a white paint Bill - willierods.com Re: Thread Discoloration

If you use metallic silver thread under it will come out nicely. Re: Thread Discoloration

Not sure how this can be prevented other then using NCP thread but I have run into the same problem with RED nylon as it turns to a hot pink after getting beat in the sun and I would bet the same goes with Pink nylon too so I think the best thing would be to just use NCP thread. Del,
I have built quite a few rods, with pink as the main color on the rods for special customers. I just use standard nylon hot pink. I apply the finish, and it darkens slightly, turns transluscent and makes a beautiful wrap for the rod. Never an issue with spots on the rod. Frequent washing of the hands is so important when wrapping as is the case of having the blank absolutely clean before wrapping. Also, you don't want any loose junk on the guides before wrapping. If you don't want any color change at all, forget the CP and just use NCP thread. Good luck Roger Re: Thread Discoloration
