3M Safety Walk tape

I purchased a roll of 3M safety walk tape and after wrapping it on the blank was surprised at how rough it was. It feels like coarse sand paper. After some research I found that there are several levels of Safety Walk and that what most folks on this site recommend is the medium Model 310 ( black) type which is what I have just ordered. This is supposed to be smoother. I also saw that someone else had the same problem and used a flame torch to "treat" the coarse wrap which made it more comfortable by melting the particles.
When I receive the 310 wrap would it be possible to wrap over the rougher safety walk or should I remove it and apply the 310? Jeff Columbia, SC Re: 3M Safety Walk tape

You might be able to smooth it out by sanding it with some ruff grit paper Or running a file over it ???
An old body man trick is to rub two pieces of sand paper together and make them a finer paper takes the points off the grit Should work on it Bill - willierods.com Re: 3M Safety Walk tape

They make two types. One is rough like sandpaper the other is a rubber base. It costs more but is a lot easier on the skin! Re: 3M Safety Walk tape

I just have to ask- What in the world are you guys doing with this stuff? Grip on a blank above the foregrip on heavy rods? Re: 3M Safety Walk tape

Bill, sanding has been tried by others without success based on a search of this forum. This would be like sanding sand paper. I may try the flame torch method and if unsuccessful simply remove the wrap.
Scott, this safety walk tape is an alternative to cork tape for surf rods. It is not slippery when wet, holds up well to sand spikes and if using the model 310 should be comfortable as well as attractive. I believe it is used on Loomis surf rods. Jeff Columbia, SC Re: 3M Safety Walk tape
