Leather is measured by ounces. A 12 by 12 by 1/4 inch piece weighs 16 ounces. That comes out to about .45 ounces a cubic inch.

According to [www.reade.com] solid cork weighs 15lbs/cf or 0.139 ounces a cubic inch.

So leather is roughly 3.2 times as heavy.

Then maybe leather strips glued over a foam core handle will be a lot lighter

Good point Bill. While you probably can't get it quite as light as cork (cork, like leather being a natural product can't possibly all have the same density therefore weight per cubic inch would have considerable variations) there is a possibility that you could get a relatively light grip by experimenting with different combinations of leather with other, lighter materials.

it will be a split grip Less weight And it is at the butt end of the rod So any weight will probably help to balance the rod
