Winding checks on heavy rods?

So I have a question about blank deformation and aluminum winding checks on heavy boat rods. I know under load all blanks get oval shaped. My question is, when you have a winding check much farther up than you would on a fly rod or bass rod build as you would on a boat rod(up to 24-30" up from the butt), and where there is more flexing of the blank, will a tight winding check (+/- .001-.005" to the diameter of the blank) will that cause the blank to fail under load?

Maybe, maybe not. Many of those blanks are super beefy and aren't as prone to breakage as thinner, higher modulus blanks would be under that same situation.

However, to be safe, install a check that's larger than the blank at that point. You can fill the space in-between with thread and finish which will be slightly flexible.

It can. What I routinely do is upsize the check and wrap it so it floats on the blank. By not having a snug check, it allows the blank to get oblong. If your check is supposed to be a 16, I bump up to an 18, etc..
