Any tips out there for applying a CA type adhesive finish to a wood grip? Do you just pour the CA onto the wood while its spinning? I'm not sure really how to go about applying it. I assume it dries really really fast. Re: CA finsih tips?

Use this search criteria on Youtube. "CA pen turning". You'll find examples that can be used on rod handles. Thanks, Chad Huderle Huderle Custom Rods Prior Lake, MN Re: CA finsih tips?

I use a CA finish on peppermills that I make which would be similar to a handle. I put thin ca on a paper towel and Immediately apply to a section on the wood spinning around 200-300 rpm then do the next section. I apply 4 to 5 coats letting it dry to the touch in between, then sand with 400 or 600 grit. Lastly high speed buff with tripoli I use a 8" buff. The finish comes out perfect every time.
Make sure the ca is fresh and stop the lathe in between coats Bob Re: CA finsih tips?

James do a You Tube search for CA finishing. Most if not all videos pertain to finishing pens but you'll get the idea. Basically while the lathe is spinning about 500 to 800 RPM's you pour a few drops on a paper towel and slide the towel down the length of the grip.Repeat at least 15 to 20 times for a nice buildup. Use either Thin or Med viscosity CA. Once you've built it up enough sand with 400 to 800 grit to take away the ridges until smooth then either use a buffing wheel with polishing compounds or a plastics polish for a deep shine. When I apply CA I do as above with a paper towel then follow up with a boiled linseed oil on a paper towell. It accelerates the reaction time to dry. Use goggles and a respirator as the CA fumes are overwhelming . Freddwhy (Rapt-Ryte) Re: CA finish tips?

You can use a paper towel if you like.
However, I found that when using a paper towel, I had issues with the glue and the towel. So, rather than using a paper towel, I use Waxed paper to apply the glue. Since the waxed paper does not soak up any glue nor will it hold any glue, you need to have the waxed paper below the object and apply the glue to the spinning object from the underside of the object. I ended up with bits of paper towel on the object when I tried to use the paper towel to apply the CA. But no such issue when using waxed paper. Take care Roger Re: CA finsih tips?

Even better then waxed paper (if you get wax on the surface it can give you problems) use poly plastic sheets, ie. any piece of plastic bags or such, best clear not with ink on it! Do it from below as Roger describes. Re: CA finsih tips?

in addition to a mask and face shield wear and old shirt and cover the ways of your lathe. that stuff will build up on the rails and can be a bugger to get off. I usually just put a piece of newspaper down under it. Re: CA finsih tips?

I use a coffee filter folded several times for applying CA and BLO.
No lint or tearing issues. Regards Dave Fishing is Life the rest is just Details Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
