Aloha,
I'm looking for a 540 extension kit to build a shore fishing rod. Are these kits still out there for sale or are there any alternatives?
Aloha,
Scott

Hey Scott,

Is this an extension kit for a 540 Newell reel? I'm not sure if you can find those any more. Are you in Hawaii?

If you are, you may want to try the ulua fishing forums. There may be some guys that still have them.

Scott,

I believe what you are looking can be found at Seeker:

Page 6 under
JIG BAIT & SURF ROD BLANKS
SJ/ULUA EXT. Adds 5' Removable or glue-in extension

The 540 can found on the bottom page 7.

You should give Seeker a call to verify that what they are offering is the kit that you are looking for.

Phone: (800) 373-3537 (562) 491-0076

Mitchell,
Up until about 1982 it was the practice to purchase a Sabre 540 tip and glue on an extention handle. The Fenwick 16810 came out in 1981 and basically replaced the Sabre Ulua rods.

Thanks for the clarification on that Don. I've only been building ulua rods the past few years, so I've only seen the IRW and Talon ulua rod blanks. My first impulse when I saw the number 540 was a Newell reel.

Seeker still makes the 10' all glass 540 blank but the only extensions I know of are the SJ/ Ulua extensions fit the SJ100 and the ULua blanks. I have the Ulua blanks but the extensions are pretty pricey . I use Talon which have the woven graphite butt sections on the Ulua blanks.
