Does anybody know the blank weight of the NFC MB 705-1? I am wanting to build a pitching rod for lighter jigs (1/4oz) this winter and I am looking at this blank or the Batson RX8+C843. The Batson comes in at 2.46oz.
Thanks Tony Wilson Cincinnati Ohio Re: Blank Weight

Tony,
This is a medium heavy blank. [www.northforkcomposites.com] Do you really want something with that heavy action for only 1/4 oz jigs? Roger Re: Blank Weight

TYony;
I've not built on that blank, but I think based on it numerical designation the the North Fork's blank is going top be a little over powered for lighter jigs especially for pitching them Re: Blank Weight

Actually, NFC rates it for jigs 1/4 to 3/4 so I guess they would know. Add a chunk of plastic to that 1/4oz jig and do the math. It's not a heavy blank at all.
As for power, it actually measures less powerful than these: SJ842-MHX ISB781 BS706S XSB843 XSB802.75 XSW68MX It would be a fine blank for what you want to do. Thanks guys! I should just come to you all before I go looking. :-)
Any recommendations on a pitching rod in the 7"0" - 7'3" that can handle light jigs? I haven't picked the reel yet either, but I want to get as light and as sensitive as possible. Tony Wilson Cincinnati Ohio Re: Blank Weight

A blank is made to throw weight Weather it be a fly line or lure weight The blank has to load with that certain weight
So i would suggest some thing that has a line weight of say 4 - 6 lb and a lure weight of a little below your 1/4 oz and a little above it Try to get in the middle for -- the sweet spot Also the line you will use get a pad and wright down what you may like around the lure weight you want to throw and line These should suite you better [www.northforkcomposites.com] Bill - willierods.com Edited 3 time(s). Tony - I assume you are pitching jigs for bass, correct? _________________________________________ "Angling is extremely time consuming. That's sort of the whole point." - Thomas McGuane Re: Blank Weight

Chuck;
Your comment is dually noted, My uniformed thought process was based on previous experiences of using pitching sticks and light jigs, at the bottom rang of a blank’s rating (in this case being a 5 power) causing the jig to not load the blank sufficiently enough for a straight low trajectory. Causing the bait to rise above the water surface higher than one might prefer. Making it more difficult to pitch under things such as docks, low hanging limbs, shore line brush, ECT. But again I have not used that blank, which is why I suggested Tony “might†want to look. Unfortunately there is not an industry wide standard for blank power ratings, which is why with your experience you noted that their 5 power is actually lighter then other’s 3 power blanks. I apologize for speaking out of turn. Tony; Based on what Chuck noted you might consider taking his advice. Re: Blank Weight

No apology needed, Steve. We're all just trying to help.
I bought that blank thinking it would be similar to a Loomis 844. It was much lighter, with a moderate-fast tip. Nothing wrong with a more moderate blank, but I like a faster tip for pitching lighter jigs. _________________________________________ "Angling is extremely time consuming. Northfork changed their relative number system with power numbers going all the way up to 9. Their 5 power may be less powerful than a 3 power that we are used to. Re: Blank Weight

I must admit, I bought mine thinking that it was going to be similar to the old 843.... It most certainly is not. It is a beautiful blank but I honestly feel that I should have gone with the 709... REALLY kicking myself for that one.
