A wax that iseffective and easier to use than candle or canning wax is the wax from a toilet seat ring. Doesn't flake/chip/crumb, stays in place well.

I have been making custom corks for over 10 years and I still use wood glue. You can say waterproof or what ever but after you turn the cork sand it and or do a custom inlay you are going to seal the cork anyways. I have had rods come back to me for eye changes and the corks still look great no cracking nothing. Hope this helps.

Titebond IS "simple" wood glue. Inexpensive and found at any hardware store. Great Stuff

Instead of wax on the threaded rod you can also try wrapping the rod with Teflon tape....works great.
