twine covering on bamboo fly rod grip

I have stripped down and refinished bamboo fly rods in the past. Now I have a fly rod butt section that is cigar shapped. The actual grip appears to be balsa wood. There is a covering of the entire grip that appears to be twine. Very similar in size to butcher string. It starts under the winding check and wraps the entire grip ending under the reel seat. Is there a particular kind of string twine that I should be using? does this twine get a few coats of bamboo rod finish or something that is used on modern rods?
thanks
Buzz

Buzz, are you sure it is twine? Could it be rattan?

Probably what you have on there is hemp. It's difficult to work with as the individual strands fray out. It used to be made from marijuana stalks & stems (as well as other veiny plants). Before it was applied it was soaked in water twisted tight & then singed to get rid of the single strands. Probably butcher twine will work as well - with less hassle finding it. Try wrapping it on the handle, singeing the outside & then applying a varnish or urethane.

This stuff looks interesting has a nylon inside that can be taken out and it is said to lay flat

Guys,
I found some 20 lb (really thin) "hemp crafting twine" which is the exact diameter and looks very similar to the original stuff. I will follow the directions you gave and I am sure it will turn out. As always thanks for the help.

Buzz -
The singeing is to remove all the 'fuzzies' after it's wrapped on.

I like the look of the Japanese flat cord. I saw elsewhere that someone was trying that wrapped in diamonds over either sharkskin or stingray. Looked interesting & I might try it on a surf rod handle

I took apart the reel seat, wrapped the hemp, singed the fuzzies, several coats of poly, reassembled the reel seat. Looks great. thanks for the help and info
