epoxy help

evening gents,

I have a rod that I built for my wife and noticed a while back that the expoy is cloudy and dull. The rod has been in the house and is not a moisture issue. The epoxy I used on it is diamondite, can I scuff and simply recoat or would I be better off with doing a quick rewrap?

thanks,
Tom

The "Diamondite" finish by Swifty is not an epoxy. I never experienced the issue you discribe but I have heard
that others have and I don't beleive re-coating will do much good.

Hopefully, someone who has had that same problem will see this and chime in.

if you have put CP on the thread before you put the finish on - but - did not let the CP fully dry That could be a reason it is cloudy ??

Bill,

nope no CP.... I don't get along well with it LOL. This rod is about 3 years old now.

Ray, I was fearing that although certainly not the end of the world.

Thomas,

Try a search using keyword Diamondite and "all dates". There could be a fix other than a re-wrap. I just don't remember.
I do know that it's more like an adhesive and a PAIN to get off a blank so good luck on the re-wrap if that's what ya do.

Tom -

The only remedy is removal. Toward the end of Swifty's existence, they had SERIOUS formulation issues. Whatever was done, turned the product from a winner to a pure nightmare. After that happened, I switched back to an oldie but goodie ... Flexcoat, no more surprises, no more formula changes.

Jim
thank you very much for the help!!! looks like this one is going in the corner for a young fisherman. I will build her a new "pretty one" as she puts it before I get too wrapped up in duck hunting!

I absolutely loved the first stuff that I got from you at the show, was AWESOME. I have switched back to your brand and another as well and have been pleased since.

thanks again for the help.

like Jim said the formula was changed somewhere along the way and after that there were problems. I don;t think it was originally designed for rod building. i had the same problems and still have a rod that that happened to.

It was an adhesive that was used to seal components on circuit boards.

I did some analysis on the Swifty finish several years ago. It is not and epoxy but a Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA) The catalyst was benzyl alcohol. If it is cloudy, you might try appling a coat of permagloss or lumiseat to the finish. I have never tryed this with the Swifty finish so I cannot assure you it will work but it sure works with epoxy. PVA with the benzyl alchol whould be compatbly with the PG and LS.
