just starting out in the rod building game and I have so maney rods that need to be rebuilt Thought I would strip them and put new guides ect on them I have four rods that I have taken down to just the blank. I have done a couple of rods and feel Im getting some what good at it and know that I have a look way to go seeing what I have seen from people that have been doing it for a while. What my question is ,is there something that I can put on the blank that would bring the newnest out (shine) The rods are in good shap other then boat rash and used alot Thanks again guys you all have been a great help.Im finding that this hobby is a habit. Im retired and my wife thinks that I have a girl friend in my shop.

Permagloss or The one I use from RodDancer that I cant recall the name right now. Also a Spar urethane will work.

Jack,
I personally prefer to strip 100% of the finish from the rod blanks. Then, I will use progressively finer grades of sandpaper until I am left with an ultra smooth Matt finish on the graphite.
Much like the Loomis MIX or the NFC blanks.

After I have built the rod, applied finish, let dry for two weeks, I will put on a coat of wax and buff it out. It makes for a very light blank, a very nice looking rod with little hassle and excellent performance.

There is a gel polyurethane that you will find one some of the wood turning sites that I tried on blanks I stripped down that works very well. WIth just a couple of coats you get a nice matt finish to the rod and it gives a nice even look to the blank. [www.woodturnerscatalog.com]
