So in your opinion, the CP will prevent 100% adhesion of the guide to the blank? Re: Does it really matter wheather you wrap your guides on a #40 class saltwater rod in D thread instead of A?

I just re-wrapped guides on a surf rod using ProWrap nylon, size D. Very pleased with results. The thread diameter seems smaller than any other mfgs D (and even some C) threads that I've ever worked with, very little bulk. I use CP on 95% of the rods I build. No salt but plenty of Great Lakes salmon trolling rods and musky rods and have yet to have a guide pull loose (had some break but never pull loose or had the wrap fail!) Like has been stated -- the thread holds the guides in place CP holds the color of regular nylon And finish protects from the Elements Bill - willierods.com Re: Does it really matter wheather you wrap your guides on a #40 class saltwater rod in D thread instead of A?

At the end of the day nothing beats your own experiments. I have read here that many have test cast with guides (masking) taped to the blank. I am here to tell you I have gone as far as to totally wrap the guides (as normal for the finished product), just not put epoxy or CP on them, and have had several get destroyed by test casting. So much for the notion that epoxy "only protects" for me.
I'm not saying others are incorrect, merely reporting my findings. I suspect it has much to do with the class of rod and the weight that is cast. In my case, it was mostly 15-20# class rods, around 8 feet, and casting in the 2-3 ounce range. I found I could easily break 15# test with a 2-3 ounce sinker yet would never break the same line on the most violent hooksets. In my case, I concluded that I subjected the guide wraps to far more stress in test casting than I would in actual fish fighting exercises. Russ in Hollywood, FL. I did a test on some Madeira thread with and without cp to see the colour difference. Also bound two single foot guides to the test wrap without locking wraps, one with and one without cp. Let the finish harden for a week and then tried to pull the guides out with a pair of pliers. Couldn't get either guide out with a straight pull, had to wiggle the guides to get the epoxy to crack before I could get them out. I was surprised to find that the guide with the cp was more difficult to get out than the one without. Also found that the epoxy had penetrated better on the wraps with cp than without.
Also think that underbindings give the epoxy something to adhere to other than a smooth blank and will give you a stronger build. Base that on a couple of my own rods that I stripped and found that even after the overbindings were removed the guides were still very firmly in place from the epoxy around the guides legs and feet. You probably could have still used the rod without the overbindings. From what I've seen cp doesn't cause any problems with strength. I've been using it since I started building and have never had a guide pull out or come loose.
