A better way to wrap those pesky Micro Guides

I have found a better way to wrap those pesky Micro Guides I find it much better then the Forhan's Locking Wrap that we all have come to use. First I have started wrapping above where the eye of the guide will go this is called a bumper wrap here I will make about three of four wraps. Now make three turns around the neck of the guide where the guide bends up to lock it down just like you would if doing a Forhan’s wrap but notice how easy it is to hold the guide down with your thumb. Once you are done wrapping around the neck of the guide continue to wrap over the foot of the guide and over the left over tag end of the thread. now you can just keep wrapping and add any decretive trim threads that you like as the guide is locked down much more strongly then with the former Forhan’s wrap ever allowed and when finished simple lock it down like you always do. This is simple a improved Forhan locking wrap I like this wrap as you will have no more of those cases of “swoosh†where did it go’ or you getting on the floor looking for those tiny Micro Guide’s anymore. Are you just wrapping around the guide 3 times or are you wrapping around the guide and the rod each time? I understand that you are starting from in front of the guide and working backwards so to speak. I am just confused as to whether you are just making wraps around the guide only or around the guide and then the rod each time. Otherwise, it sounds like a good idea. Hi - in your experience, is it reasonably easy to adjust the alignment of the guides when using this method?
Thanks Rick Re: A better way to wrap those pesky Micro Guides

Glenn I would be interested to know a couple of things - 1. what size and type of thread and 2. what brand, style and size of micro guide you are using when you employ this method. Re: A better way to wrap those pesky Micro Guides

Interesting idea, I'll have to try that on my next build. That is, if you don't mind.
I generally start the wrap and then slide the foot under the wrap and then wiggle it out every few turns until I'm up the ramp and onto the foot. Re: A better way to wrap those pesky Micro Guides

I have also done it that way before but the problem was the those guides would simple fly out from under the wrap unless it was tied down real good but with the thread wrapped around the neck of the guide and then wrapped around the foot or arm of the guide there is no place for that micro guide to go and that mean no lost guides. I use size 2 and 4 guides and size A thread one all on all my micro guides Glenn McMurrian Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 10/07/2011 02:41PM by Glenn McMurrian. Re: A better way to wrap those pesky Micro Guides

I wrap around the guide neck 3 or 4 times then wrap around the foot of the guide to secure it down then remove your thumb from the guide once this is done Glenn McMurrian Re: A better way to wrap those pesky Micro Guides

It would seem that you could wrap the same 3 or 4 times around the neck on the way up the foot to the guide ring.....I have zero problems losing guides and I'm using 1/16th" strips of super tacky automotive painting masking tape to secure them to the blank. With starting the thread a few turns and then slipping the guide foot under and making a few more turns, as long as you wiggle the guide and not pull on it, I have never had an issue with the guide popping out of the thread. Only time it pops out if I accidently pull instead of wiggle the guide. Re: A better way to wrap those pesky Micro Guides

I wrap around the Guide 3 to 4 time first then start wrapping around the foot of the guide until you get to the end of the guide. Glenn McMurrian Re: A better way to wrap those pesky Micro Guides

Okay Glenn, I'm real dumb so I want to make sure I understand your concept. Basically it sounds like you are wrapping the guides backwards compared to normal. You are doing a blocking wrap first, then the Forhan locking wraps, then the nromal guide wrap, all the while wrapping from the tip end towards the butt end of the rod.....correct???
If I understand correctly I like your solution. I find it hard to tape them in place and harder to make the same number of wraps and wiggle the guide forward the same amount for every guide. On very fast action rods (with delicate tips) I often end up with a little longer guide wrap in a last place on the blank that I would want that to happen. Russ in Hollywood, FL. Yes Russ I think you got the concept down it is just like you said as it is mostly a backwards Forhan’s locking wrap just do the bumper wrap and the locking wrap before you wrap the foot of the guide.
