Alright, here's a can of worms to open up.
I'm looking for a GREAT spinnerbait blank. I wanted to get some feedback before purchasing a bunch of blanks only to have them not fit the bill. So my opinion (nothing more than that) is that a 7' to 7'3" medium heavy to heavy blank would do nicely for 1/2 ounce and 3/4 ounce blades. 12-17lb line and a fairly fast action. Am I on the right track or is there another line of thinking that is worth exploring? Thanks Joe Re: Spinnerbait Blank

Hi Joe, yes you are correct for general specs on an all around spinnerbait rod. You can get more specific regarding the size spinnerbait you are throwing and how you are fishing it but for 'spinnerbait rod' you are correct. I love the xmb843 for throwing spinnerbaits, it is light yet powerfull and you can feel every tick of grass before that 'Thump!!' we we all love. We have them in stock and are glad to offer any other info. Two great blanks that come to mind - For a 7' blank, the MB843-MHX and for the 7'-3" blank, the MB873-MHX. Not only are they good for the size spinnerbait you have mentioned, both are a very versatile blank that you can use for many other types of applications for bass fishing. You will get a lot more usage out of the rod, other than just a spinnerbait. We also off both those models in our Hi-Modulus series, HM-MB843-MHX and HM-MB873-MHX, that are even more sensitive and lighter in weight, making for a more responsive performing rod blank. I second the MB843 Bob mentioned. It is just a great all around blank. I also like the HM-SB812-MHX for a spinnerbait. It has an x-fast tip on it, which I like a lot throwing spinnerbaits. However, it is 6'9". The most versitile rod I have though is one built on the 843. Great blank. Re: Spinnerbait Blank

Consider the Batson "Walleye" series.
They have a little more moderate action that many spinnerbait and crankbait fans like. The XSW72MHM is a moderate action with good backbone and should handle up to 1 oz lures easily. I recently used a XSW72MM for spinnerbaits in the 1/2 oz range and it worked very well on Minnisota Northern Pike and Bass. That's interesting.
I'm curious why a moderate or medium action would be better. (i'm not saying it's not, just curious) There are a lot of "spinnerbait" blanks that are more of a moderate blank, my question is "why"? Re: Spinnerbait Blank

Joe,
It's really just personal preference. I suspect that people think of a spinnerbait bite, much like a crank bait bite, since the fish usually hits the lure while it's moving. While a moderate action is good to help keep fish hooked up with treble hooks, I feel it doesn't really add anything special to spinnerbait fishing. Personally, I like a fast-extra fast action rod anytime I'm fishing a single hook lure, depending on the size and weight of the lure. Once the single hook is set, as long as you keep pressure on, that fish isn't coming off. Joe Re: Spinnerbait Blank

Because if I told you there was a spinnerbait rod and a worm rod, you'd now need two rods and I can sell you both. Outside of that, angler ability or use may require a difference in rod performance. If I'm shooting a spinnerbait under a dock or overhangs, I'll probably need a different rod than if I am casting across a point and slow rolling. ----------------- AD Re: Spinnerbait Blank

Knowledge determines blank selection for the custom builder who deals in the task specific bass market.
Bob i hope you concur with this post. The choice of lure usually defines one very critical thing - THE TYPE OF HOOK! HOOK TYPE AND THE SKILL LEVEL OF THE ANGLER IS VERY IMPORTANT WHEN SELECTING THE PROPER ACTION OF A TASK SPECIFIC BLANK. The proper blanks selection pertaining to action for a spinner bait rod which uses a single point hook penetration is best served by a fast action blank. The power if the rod is matched to the total lute weight, size of fish and cover. Winners of tournaments and those seeking the best equipment will normally spend the money to obtain a blank for single point hooks and one of a different action for treble hook presentations.. Some call it marketing and other call is plain common sense. You will see the marketing soon! Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 10/04/2011 06:09PM by Bill Stevens. Re: Spinnerbait Blank

The MHX MB843 and 873 would be my recommendations for those lengths. But as has been suggested the MHX SB812 is a super blank for spinner baits. These are all available in the original & high mod blanks.
I think you'd be happy with any of these suggestions. Re: Spinnerbait Blank

I would suggest the MHX HM873. The SB812 is a little to soft for me, might be good for 1/4 oz baits, but 3/8 or larger the 873 is the deal. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
