Hi I want to build a spinning rod with a rating of 20#. This will be a saltwater rod. What would be the best guide choice, single or double footed guides. This rod will be used to catch bonito, and calico bass. Thanks in advance. Re: 20 # spinning rod question

Since you mentioned bonito, I would say that DF guides would be my first choice. Re: 20 # spinning rod question

Calstar 196. 7, I have several, and have even caught 30# + Albacore and Yellowtail on them. One has 15#, the other has 20# test Ron Weber Re: 20 # spinning rod question

What is your reasoning behind that, Jim? Thanks. Re: 20 # spinning rod question

2X on the CalStar blanks either 196-7 or 270-7 with the 270 being "beefier". I think I would use a mix of guides - one or two doubles down low & singles out toward the tip. Re: 20 # spinning rod question

On a 20# class saltwater blank, the weight difference between SF and DF is insignificant, thus the option for sturdier guides. Re: 20 # spinning rod question

I might suggest a Seeker Hercules GTS 70 L or the GTS 80 for medium action or the Seeker Inshore CBS 708 or CBW 709 for a faster tip. Standard spinning, single foot guides should be more than adequate. Re: 20 # spinning rod question

I use singles on all my saltwater spinning rods up to 30# line class rods. Caught 50 lb fish no problems with strength of guides. Rufus Port Saint Lucie, FL Re: 20 # spinning rod question

What Rufus said.
Typical for me would be alconites or ringlock nanolites in 316 SS. I suspect the east coast bonita run a little smaller but I fish a st. croix 2sw70mf. On reels with 2 spools I can load one with 8-10# mono and the other with braid that tests out at 15-20#. The rod will handle both okay but you might want to step on one notch in power.....and maybe length. I find it hard to find double foot guides in a high enough frame. Maybe I don't know where to look? Russ in Hollywood, FL. Re: 20 # spinning rod question

I would personaly single foot it, as for the blank it depends on what you are throwing at them. There are a lot of blanks int he 20lb range that would work, post up details of how you are fishing to help us offer some more specific suggestions.
