Working on a 7 foot spinning rod, and the angler will be using either a Shimano 2000 (40mm diameter) or 4000 (46.6mm diameter) reel. Splitting the baby on the reels, math says the choker should be about 46 inches from the reel face. Reel face will be 14" from the butt, leaving 70", so the 4 other running guides will be slightly less than 5" apart (70" from reel face to tip minus 46 inches to choker equals 24" for running guides) . This leaves 24" for the reduction guides, probably three. Does this add up properly, and more importantly look sensible? This is my first spinning rod and I am looking forward to the NGC results.
For what it's worth, I usually build fly rods. Re: New Guide Concept: check my math

Doesn't matter how it looks - what matters is how it works.
The choker at about 46 inches from the reel face is correct. Everything else should fall into place as you set things up per the article. Do what it says and then go cast is and see how you like it. Without knowing the line size and type I can't really advise you on a butt guide but I suspect you'll need to start with at least a 25. Then I'd try a set-up that starts with a 30 and compare notes. .................. Re: New Guide Concept: check my math

You've got the choker guide right if you're splitting the difference. I came up with 42" and 49" for your two reels. Tape on your running guides equidistant and fine tune them wth static testing. You can't really say you've got 24" for the reduction guides because it depends on what size stripper guide you use. If your using braid you may get by with a size 20 but for mono I would consider a size 25. The transition guides will be determined based upon that and the choker guide.
I \wouldn't worry so much about the looks, if it performs well, then that's what matters. A lot of store bought rods look "normal" but perform...well...ah...anyway...that's why we custom build. Good luck with your build! Thanks, Chad Huderle Huderle Custom Rods Prior Lake, MN Re: New Guide Concept: check my math
