Epoxy on the whole rod?

Is there any reason NOT to put finish on the whole rod? I painted a blank with Duplicolor Green Pearl and applied 2 coats of Lumiseal. I just did my first coat of Pro_Kote finish and the areas where the finish coated the blank look awesome. The paint really jumps out. I coated a section just above the butt wrap where I am going to apply some decals and now I want to cover the whole rod. I am not worried about weight.
IAre there any dangers in doing this? Thanks , Joe Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 09/14/2011 08:36AM by Joe Willsen. Re: Epoxy on the whole rod?

In a word YES there can be problems in covering the entire rod, I get asked at least twice a week to re epoxy a rod that was totally covered in finish, the finish is meant to cover and protect thread not the blank it will often crack, peel and look similar to dried alligator skin in general the longer it is on the worse it will appear, many use it but I have seen all to many big problems occurring for having done so.

I have fully coated many rods the entire length with no issues.
If you are concerned about using epoxy, use spray polyurethane. It will intensify the color and is easy to apply and/or repair when it gets nicked. Always learning with Ohio Rod Builders Joe Azar Re: Epoxy on the whole rod?

Joe,
If you are not worried about weight, go ahead and put several coats of finish on the entire rod. You will add significant weight to the rod, change the action of the rod, but you will have a nicely finished rod. Take care Roger Re: Epoxy on the whole rod?

Epoxy isn't really meant to be used as a surface coating on a rod blank. If you want to gloss the rod blank, you'd be better off putting a thin, lightweight, tough yet flexible covering such as your LumaSeal on it.

Many reasons to and many reasons not to, one thing I will emphasize as mentioned above is that the epoxy will yellow over time and the look will not remain the same. PermaGloss was invented for just such a project, was it not?

Cut and paste from original post. My question would be if a one part urethane can be buffed from a matte/satin to a gloss? Russ in Hollywood, FL. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
