I have a customer that would like his wraps done in Pearl thread.

Are there any threads out there that give a pearlescent look?

I'm striking out in my looking around.

Additionally...maybe some sort of additive to the thread finish to give the quality, over a white/off-white thread.

Matt, Check out FishHawk Metallic P, Iris 9004. This thread was once called, "Pearl".

There is aSulky Metallic Peal that I've used before. The pearlescent effect is more green with this thread, rather than blue.

There is also an Australian thread by Marlin Bros that has a very good pearl look. They advertise in the US on that unmentionable @#$%& sight but their thread comes in large packs, 40 spools which are about 100 yds, maybe 50yds each which might not be enough to complete a rod. It's pretty good metallic thread in size "a" with 40 different colours and I use it a fair bit for trim and highlights. You may be able to contact them and see if you can get a few spools of that colour if you can't get anything else that's suitable.
Checked the site where I get mine from and he hasn't got any listed at the moment.

If you can find it Gudebrod Ht Metallic # 9003 is pearl.

I have a spool of Gudebrod HT Metallic Pearl White. It is EXACTLY what you need. Just be aware that it absolutely does need CP. It is the only metallic that does. If you want it, I can mail it to you ... I have your address.

Matt I have used the Gudebrod metallic pearl and it looks really sharp. HOWEVER I give the blank a coat of white paint underneath the wrap as even with CP the black of the blank will bleed through. Take a minute and do a mock up with a guide with black blank and the area under the wrap painted white then pearl then CP and finsih. Afther you put finish on compare them side by side. It is worth the time and effort to look at them one with the white paint.

If you want to try something different, add a little Pearl Ex powdered pigment while mixing your epoxy. Use white thread for an underwrap. It's available at places like Michael's and there are metalic and pearl colors.

I recently saw a rod that had been built - without the OK of the head rod builder at a nearby rod shop - with white metallic.

Yes, the rod was built and finished, but I have to admit that it was one of the very ugliest rods that I had ever seen. i.e. all of the thread used on the rod was white metallic. Just too much white to be attractive.
I think the idea of a test mock up - and a sign off by the client would be a good idea before proceeding with the actual build on the clients blank.
