Uh oh, what happened?

I got a 8 oz combo pack of flexcoat finish. First time I have used it, but wanted to try it out. I mixed it well (2 to 3 min) and then let it set for 2 min. Went to pour it onto a platter and the measuring cup almost burnt my fingers. Was very hot and the Flexcoat was already hard on top. Thinking I had messed up on my measurment, I tried again with the same results.
Any ideas? Lee Smith Re: Uh oh, what happened?

Lee,
It seems that you are mixing the Flexcoat 5 minute epoxy. Read the label on the bottles to make sure. Hope this helps, Andres Perez Re: Uh oh, what happened?

Yup, sounds like epoxy adhesive, not finish. _________________________________________ "Angling is extremely time consuming. That's sort of the whole point." - Thomas McGuane Re: Uh oh, what happened?

Nope, not 5 min. It is definately finish. Was wondering if heat exposure during shipping could have caused it? This afternoon I tried one more round using 5cc's of each and the mix was very thick just after mixing for 2.5 min. In 4 min. you could touch your finger to it and leave a print without it sticking to your finger tip. Re: Uh oh, what happened?

No, only the temperature experienced while mixing would make any difference. Something is very wrong here. It certainly sounds like you're working with the rod builders epoxy and not the finish epoxy.

Mix it well and pour out onto aluminum foil, don't wait any to apply either. Never mix a cup full and leave it in the cup or plan on applying from the cup. It will get hot and set on ya very fast. The more finish that's in the cup (volume wise) the faster it reacts, heats and sets on you.

Thanks DR, I'll do a test wrap and go straight from the cup, tin then thread, see how it does. Re: Uh oh, what happened?

Yep, It's a bad batch, tried the test, mixed and went straight to the blank while spinning. It never leveled, clumped exactly where I put it. I will get some more and try it again, love the crystal look of it. Re: Uh oh, what happened?

Now that you're sure it's finish, I agree with Duane. Depending on how much is in the cup, it can get hot and do exactly what yo are saying. Pour it out on foil

VOLUME is the key. The more in the cup, the faster it heats up and sets up. If you mix in very small batches you can apply straight from mixing cup.
Pour it out onto foil. This gives you longer "working times" and better leveling due to the slower set you'll get. DR Re: Uh oh, what happened?

I have mixed 5 and 6 CCs of finish and always have had plenty of time to put on guides and or butt wraps

Ordered some more today! Gotta believe it's a bad batch or something happened in shipping. Will see what happens.
