It can vary depending on personal prefference.
We have done as short as 5", and as long as 11"
I like 8-9" on a 7 1/2' rod

Best wishes,

Personal preference, for my own rods I like it to hit about mid forearm or just a little closer to my elbow when I have a fish on. If it is a customers rod mock it up and let them feel of it and see what they like, makes the difference between a true custom and store bought rod. :)

There is no magical hard set number. It will depend on the reel size, how you cast, how you fight a fish, etc. For the heavy tuna popping rods, I go with 12-14" rear grip length usually between the end of the reel seat and start of the gimbal. Inshore saltwater rods will get between 10-14 usually, depending on what the customer wants and needs. Freshwater rods are different than saltwater rods in terms of placement.

We need more info on the reel being used, type of rod, etc to really give you a ballpark number, but the best way is to mock it out for yourself or the customer. Tape a reel seat on, tape the guides on, and cast. See how it balances, the casting distance, see how it would feel fighting a fish, etc.

What I have done in the past is go to a store with a number of rods, check them out and measure the one I like. Also, there is a very popular bass fishing tackle web site that lists handle lengths for all of the rods it sells.

As a frame of reference, I'm 5 9 1/2, wear a 33" long sleeve shirt and build my personal 7' spinning rods with the center of the reel seat 10 1/2 inches from the butt end of the rod regardless split grip or not.

What you could do is take the blank and grab it where you think the seat might be then us it as if you are fishing Adjust your hand watch that it does not hit your belly and clothing.

When comfortable mark the position of your hand from the back mark and that is where you butt handle will start.

As Ray posted, it doesn't matter the type grip you are putting on the rod. Place the reel on the rod that works best for you, if it is your rod; or y our customers if it is for a customer.

It can be any thing from 0 inches to 6 feet. You choose.

You don't want it to long so the butt gets caught up in your clothes.
