Can anyone provide a ball park figure for how much weight the components of a standard 9' 5 weight fly rod should add to the blank? For example, if the blank weighs 2 ounces and standard components are used (nothing real fancy) what would you expect the weight of the finished rod to be? Is there any rule of thumb? St. Croix's site lists weights for bare blanks and factory rods. Pick the rod series that's closest to what you're building it should give you general idea of what you want to know.

Randall,
The best rule of thumb is to use the lightest components that match the needs of the fisherman and then build the rod. Roger Re: blank weight vs. component weight

Not exactly the same but close...I just built a 6'6" spinning rod and weighed the blank before and after building the rod. Blank weighed 1.57 ounces. Completed rod 3.10 ounces. I think the seat was exactly one ounce. Cork (split grip with 2 cork sections, each 3.5 inches. for the equivalent of a 7 inch grip. anyway, I added about 1.53 ounces doing the build. I used 4 F (single foot ceramic fly) sz 6, a VS 07 (single foot spinning), and a couple of Match guides (very high frames sz10, sz16). I would think that your guide train would weigh less, even with a few more guides. George Forster Fort Collins, CO Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 08/12/2011 11:43PM by George Forster.
