I'm thinking of building a short bent butt tuna rod, and cant decide on a blank.
I was strongly considering the Calstar Boomer Jr. and Baja Boomer and cutting them down to make a 5' overall rod. The idea of having to cut the blank so significantly to fit the unibutt is somewhat unappealing, although i know it can be done. I also saw that a few companies offer 4' blanks that are meant for the Unibutts, no cutting required. United Composites (the old GUSA) has some 4 footers 40Xh, 40XXH, 40XO. Calstar Graphiter has the GF410XH Pacific Bay, American Tackle, and Batson all have 4-foot stubbie blanks for the unibutts as well. Butt will be a #2 short bent unibutt, 0.873 ferrule ID AA Roller guides or Aftco Wind-ons Rod will be a multi use rod, paired with a Penn 70VS, 130lb braid and topshot. I fish a private boat here in NJ, and will use it for large bait fishing for swordfish, and trolling for marlin and tuna, occassionally with a large #32 planer to get deep. Typical fighting drag will be approx. 25-35lbs, but drag can approach 60lbs when trolling the planer at 5-6knts. I'm not opposed to the budget PacBay/AmTak/Batson blanks for $30-40, but somehow when I'm spending over $100 on guides and $100 on a unibutt, cutting corners on the blank doesnt make sense. Could anyone provide some guidance as to which blank would be most appropriate? THANKS Re: Blank for Short Stroker Tuna Rod

If you can find the length you require in something that is already sized to fit the Uni-Butt, I'd go that route.
However, cutting the others from the butt and replacing the cut length with a Uni-Butt will restore the original power and action for the most part. So if you do have to cut, it's not any sort of huge disadvantage. ................. Re: Blank for Short Stroker Tuna Rod

Thanks Tom. I am not totally afraid of cutting the blank, just not sure which one to go with. If I get the Jr. and take most off of the butt and some off tip, does it end up having the same action as a full Boomer? I dont know... and that is what has me thinking...
Hoping someone on here has built something similar to this and can chime in with their decision making process and result... Thanks. Re: Blank for Short Stroker Tuna Rod

You only want to cut from the butt - then use the Uni-butt to replace that lost length with. That will preserve the original action and power of the blank.
Cutting from the tip is going to change the action (slower) but if you cut from the butt, and then replace that length with the UB, you haven't effectively changed anything. ............. Re: Blank for Short Stroker Tuna Rod

I have built bent butt short strokers as short as 4'8" total length using the Calstar GF755XXH and the Seeker CTSF50XXH. Both nice blanks. Re: Blank for Short Stroker Tuna Rod
