Hello .

I wonder if such fine metallic thread exist , and if those have been used to wrapp guide ?
Specially if fine thread are used too ,like sulky thread for exemple .( or other fine thread )

All metallic thread seem to be as thick as size "A" thread ?

Thanks .

D.

I use Sulky metallics a lot, but for trim bands and underwraps. Never used it as a guide wrap. Sulky is a bit thinner than regular A metallic.

I like the Sulky (especially the holoshimmer) because it lays flat. If you take your time with it you can make it lay very flat on the blank. I don't think it would be as strong as others though.

Well , not realy for wrapping guide in fact , but for the trim band .

I received Fish Hawk "000 - 3 / 0" Pure Japanese Silk Thread , that are so thin!
I wondered if metallic thread would match with such tiny thread ?

Didier, Check out the FishHawk Silk Sparkle. It is made from the 3/0 silk but twisted with one small strand of metallic. It will be slightly thinner than "A". I have a rod which uses this thread for guide wraps.

I have wrapped a good number of guides with metallics. Never had a problem with it. I think it is all with the epoxy. All the thread does is hold the guides on.

Sulky metallic is very thin, and my favorite thread for wrapping guides. Metallic thread is about all I ever use, it is great getting bright vibrant colors without the hassle and extra drying time you get with color preserver.

Hello .

I just purchased Sulky thread .
There are Sulky metallic and Sulky Silver . I didn' found the holoshimmer .

Sulky Metallic diameter is very close to the diam. of Gudebrod thread "A" . Difficult to say if it is a little thinner or a little thicker.
With a digital caliper :
-Gudebrod thread "A = 0.10mm =0.00393 inch
-Sulky Metallic = 0.12mm=0.00472inch

But the caliper crush the thread ...
The strengh of the Sulky Metallic is well below Gudebrod Thread "A".

The Fish Hawk "000 - 3 / 0" Pure Japanese Silk Thread = 0.04mm = 0.00157inch.( still with the caliper)

The Sulky SIlver is flat ! And caliper says : 0.04mm = 0.00157inch and has no strength .
For trim band and décorative , i think i'll give a try too with Fish Hawk Silk . But i wonder if it will be easy to get a neat wrap with such a flat string ?

Robbie , i think the FishHawk Silk Sparkle will be in my nest order .

Thank you guys . Interesting to know that you wrap your guide with metallic thread , and that's fine .

To make a good comparison between different thread , i'm thinking to wrap them on a cylinder , then apply my finish ( Flex coat lite ) in one layer.
And when hard , i will be able to use my caliper , to find the correct thickness .( SInce i have the thickness of the cylinder )
And if i can , I will weigh each wrap .

THe thinnest metallic thread by far is MAdeira 50 wt 7/2 thread. 7.25 threads per mm, compared to SUlky A which is 5.95, Fishhawk 5.3, and Gudebrod 4.55 per. I didn't measure wiht calipers, I made a 20mm long wrap and counted every time the blank turned, I have a ful chart for metallic and regular thread. SUlky is noticeably thinner than Gudebrod, you can see it and feel it when wrapping that it is thinner. The 50 wt Madeira is REALLY fine.
