Polyester thread

Has anyone used polyester thread for wrapping guides. How does it hold up with epoxy?

Polyester is very good. I use a brand called "Mettler Polysheen" in 40weight. Have had no problems with it. Been using it for a few years now.

Hi Joel,
I'm using Madeira polyneon 40 and I find it fine for guide wraps and decoratorive wraps and have no strength issues on guide wraps. It needs a few coats of cp if you want to retain the spool colour and avoid fisheyes. See the couple of posts I've made in the last week as I did some testing on the stuff using a method that prevents fisheyes but unfortunately there is some marked colour differences with this method. I've been using it for over four years without any problems.

Thanks for the replies. I am using black thread, so I don't think I need any CP.

The CP use for threads like Madeira is not just for color, but because the threads are used for emboidery, there is silicone added to make the thread pass throught the embroidery machines easier. This can cause you to get fisheyes in the finish. If you do a search here though you will see some have tried putting some thread into the finish when mixing it and it has helped with the fisheye problem.

If you are using Black thread just buy Nylon as it's a LOT easier to work with and wrap vs sewing machine threads.

Just my little input on this thread! Sorry, couldn't resist. The general concensus seems to be that Madiera and Mettler are the most commonly used polyester threads.I would agree because I use decent quantities of both but please don't block yourself into a mindset that these are the only ones to use. I have several different brands that I'm using at the moment and one of the nicest, if you can get it, is from the "Brother" brand. The thread has exceptional lustre to it and is excellent to use. I've only been able to get it in 100m spools at the moment but if I can get hold of it in 800-1000m spools, then it may become the most predominate brand I'll use. Billy is totally right about using black nylon.
