I used flex coat on a fiberglas rod and because I mixed it in a paper drinking cup, it won't harden. How do I remove it? All suggestions welcome. Re: How to remove flex coat that won't harden on a fiberglas rod

You might not have to remove it. Mix up a finish batch properly and apply as a second coat, should work just fine. Re: How to remove flex coat that won't harden on a fiberglas rod

What does the paper drinking cup have to do with it not hardening?

Donald,
Just use strong solvent and take off the finish, and a razor blade and cut the wraps off of the rod. Clean up the blank, and start again. If you don't cut the guides off and start again, it is not likely that you will like the finished results. Good luck Roger Re: How to remove flex coat that won't harden on a fiberglas rod

Doubt it was the cup, more likely incorrect measurement on inadequate blending. You don't state whether this guide wraps or the entire blank. Re: How to remove flex coat that won't harden on a fiberglas rod

Phil,
I did make the mistake of using a wax coated paper cup one time to mix up a batch of finish. However, I was a bit worried about, it and decided to test the cure on an old blank. Sure enough, the finish never cured properly. The reason that I did the test was that I had a bunch of these cups and was going to use them for mixing if it worked out. But it didn't cure. My thinking is that the wax liner of the cup mixed a bit with the finish and caused the improper curing. I went and picked up the standard plastic cup that I had been using and no more problems. So, I suspect that the most likely issue was an improper mix, but don't discount the possiblity of cup contamination causing the issue as well. Be safe Roger Re: How to remove flex coat that won't harden on a fiberglas rod

The wax might possibly cause some fish eyes, but it isn't going to keep a properly measured and mixed epoxy from curing. Something else is going on here.

It might be as the epoxy heats it takes the wax off the cup and blends in with the epoxy.. will the epoxy cure with wax mixed in?? Or is there a silicon product in the cup?? Re: How to remove flex coat that won't harden on a fiberglas rod

It would still set and cure, although it might not look very good.
To remove finish that hasn't set up isn't hard - just wipe it off. Apply a properly measured and mixed batch on whatever's left and all should be well. ............ Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
